SO WHAT EXACTLY IS IGTV?
IGTVis a long-form vertical video channel released by Instagram itself in 2018.
It is available as a standalone app, and it can also be accessed directly through the Instagram app as well.
According to Instagram itself, IGTV’s maximum video length is 60 minutes. However, for regular accounts, IGTV videos are required to be between 15 seconds and 10 minutes in duration.
So far, adoption has been relatively slow on IGTV.
What this means is that IGTV is still in the process of taking off, and slowly but surely it will start to reward those who are quick enough to master the platform.
So let’s now get into our top 10 tips to help you grow on IGTV:
TIP #1: SHOOT YOUR VIDEOS IN VERTICAL FORMAT
Unlike YouTube, which is predominantly built for “horizontal” videos, IGTV is built for “vertical” videos.
Therefore, make sure all of your videos are either shot vertically, or at the very least can be edited to look presentable as vertical-oriented videos on IGTV.
TIP #2: MAKE SURE YOUR VIDEOS INCLUDE SUBTITLES
When IGTV users watch videos, the app defaults to “sound off” for videos that automatically play unless you manually change the settings.
Therefore, you need to optimize your videos for silent viewing. The best way to do this is through subtitles that match the script of your video.
We at Spiel get our subtitles done by Rev.com as they are relatively cheap and provide fast turnaround time. If you aren’t familiar with Rev.com, you can visit their website to see if there service works for you as well.
TIP #3: HASHTAGS
You can add relevant hashtags to the caption and description text of an IGTV video, just as you would with a normal Instagram post.
However, there IS such a thing as too many hashtags.
It’s possible to include up to 30 hashtags for each video, but studies suggest that after nine hashtags, engagement starts to decrease. So don’t over-do it and make sure each hashtag you add is relevant to your content or brand.
That way, when people search up your hashtag and find your video, they’ll be more likely to watch it because the content is relevant to their immediate needs.
TIP #4: CONNECT YOUR IGTV POST TO AN INSTAGRAM STORY
This is a great way to get more traffic towards your IGTV video!
When you have your IGTV video published, you can create a promotional Instagram story that directs people towards your video.
Make sure to link the IGTV video in your Story, and tell people to “swipe up” to gain access to the video.
TIP #5: HAVE A VISUALLY ATTRACTIVE THUMBNAIL
On IGTV, your thumbnail can make or break how many views your video gets. It is quite literally the “first impression” people get before they watch your video.
Before uploading your video you have the option to upload your own bespoke thumbnail or use frame from within your video.
In addition to making sure that your thumbnail accurately describes the content of your video, make sure that it matches the visual look of your instagram feed.
This will help establish more consistency, as your viewers are already familiar with the type of content you publish and how it appears to them.
TIP #6: GIVE YOUR AUDIENCE A ONE-MINUTE PREVIEW OF YOUR IGTV VIDEO
Before you finish uploading your video to IGTV, you have a “Post Preview” option that allows you to showcase a 1-minute preview of your video to your followers.
When you do this, your followers can watch your video and press the “Keep Watching” button if they wish to watch the entire video. So mark sure you take advantage of this feature.
TIP #7: SHARE YOUR VIDEO TO A FACEBOOK PAGE CONNECTED TO YOUR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT
To help your video gain more reach, before you upload it to IGTV, you
can also share your it to your Facebook page connected to your Instagram
Simply enable the “Make Visible on Facebook” option before you upload your video to take advantage of this feature.
TIP #8: GIVE PEOPLE THE ‘HOOK’ RIGHT AWAY
Let’s face it: You have just a few seconds to
capture your audience’s attention and keep them hooked.
That’s why the first 5-15 seconds of your video have to “give the goods away”.
You need to tell people exactly what your video is about and what they will get out of watching it.
This very short intro must “hook” your viewers into watching, so it’s crucial that you come up with something creative and compelling for your audience.
TIP #9: ONLY POST LONGER CONTENT ON IGTV
Your IGTV channel is an extension of your Instagram profile, but they
need to be uniquely different.
Keep your Instagram profile for shorter form content (Stories and videos under 60 seconds), and your IGTV for longer content, up to 10 minutes in duration.
This is especially important, as long-form content is becoming increasingly popular on IGTV.
TIP #10: REMEMBER TO POST CONSISTENTLY
None of the tips we have shared with you are going to work unless you are consistently posting quality content on IGTV.
Let your audience know how often you’ll be posting on IGTV within a given week, what time(s) they can expect new content to be published, and stick to it!
