We\u2019ve put together a video summarising a large video engagement study and the findings that will help you to decide the right length for your explainer video!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe class=\"embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5fCGuI2VupY\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Video Transcription<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How long should I make my Explainer Video? is a question we get a lot here at Spiel. And it\u2019s a good one because, if you get your explainer video length wrong, it\u2019s likely you\u2019ll struggle to engage your audience with its key message!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help you answer the question \u2018How long should I make my Explainer Video?\u2019 we\u2019re going to refer to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"comprehensive study (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/wistia.com\/learn\/marketing\/optimal-video-length\" target=\"_blank\">comprehensive study<\/a> conducted by video whizzes <a href=\"https:\/\/wistia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Wistia<\/a>. In it, they measured how video length affects engagement by examining a whopping 564,710 videos and more than 1.3 billion plays!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And from it, we can learn some direct and actionable steps that can\nimprove the engagement of your videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The first 30 seconds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To start\nwith, in the first 30 seconds, video engagement drops on average from 100% to\nroughly 70%. With 30% of the audience tuning out, it\u2019s the sharpest drop off\nany point in the video. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it&#8217;s\nkey to grab your viewer\u2019s attention from the very beginning and ensure those\nfirst 30 seconds are particularly engaging if you want to minimise this drop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of\nthe best ways to accomplish this are by having a great hook at the beginning\nand to avoid starting your video with your brand logo and a boring introduction\nfor your company that drags on way too long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of\nways you can really connect with your target audience from the offset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between 30 seconds and 2 minutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From\nthere, video engagement interestingly drops very little from 30 seconds to 2\nminutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data\nsuggests that, if a viewer watches the first 30 seconds of your video, they\u2019re\nlikely to keep watching it until the 2-minute mark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main\ntakeaway to remember here is: Keeping your short videos between 30 seconds\n&amp; 2 minutes is the safest strategy for minimising drops in engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between 2 minutes and 6 minutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving\nforward, however, after 2 minutes the drop off is quite sharp. And this\ncontinues all the way to the 6-minute mark. Is by that point, according to\nWistia&#8217;s study, 50% of your viewers on average will have stopped watching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are\ncreating a longer video, be aware that there\u2019s likely to be a larger drop in\nengagement between 2 and 6 minutes. So make sure this section of the video is\nas engaging as possible to keep your viewers watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between 6 minutes and 12 minutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 6\nand 12 minutes, however, there\u2019s again surprisingly little change in\nengagement. So, if viewers watch 6 minutes, according to the data, they\u2019re\nlikely to stay for 12. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your\nvideo needs to be longer than 6 minutes, you won&#8217;t have to worry too much about\na drop in engagement from the 6th to 12th minute. So whether it\u2019s 6,7,8 or 12\nminutes long, there\u2019s no need for concern as long as the content remains\nrelevant for your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between 12 minutes and 20 minutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally,\nafter 12 minutes, engagement starts to decline sharply again until the 20th\nminute, where the Wistia study ends. But interestingly not as sharply as\nbetween minutes 2 and 6. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,\nideally, in most cases, try to keep your long videos below the 12-minute mark\nto maximise audience retention, unless you really have to make them longer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that\nwe\u2019ve examined the results of the Wistia study, let\u2019s return to our original\nquestion: How long should Explainer Videos on your website be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, when talking about explainer videos on your website specifically, I suggest keeping them below 2 minutes in most cases.
