From choosing the right software to\nexporting your final project, I will break down the editing process into\nbite-size steps to help you get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High end professional editing is a skill\nthat can take years to hone. But once you know the basic steps which will be\ncovered in this video, there&#8217;s no reason why you can\u2019t start editing your own\nvideos to a good standard and then overtime, further develop your skill set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hi, I\u2019m Kev, before we begin, make sure you\nsubscribe to our channel and hit the notification bell so that you get notified\nwhen we upload new videos to help you with your video marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This video editing tutorial is intended for\nbeginners. While you won\u2019t be a pro right away, we\u2019ll be covering the basics to\nget you started on your way to editing greatness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without further ado, let\u2019s get started with\nstep one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step\n1: Choose the right software<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step you need to take is to\nchoose the video editing software that\u2019s right for you. There are many options\navailable for this, but three of the more common ones that are used by\nbeginners and professionals alike are: iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere\nPro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re using a Mac and have a tight\nbudget, then iMovie is a good bet as it\u2019s really easy to learn and comes as\npart of Apples own pre installed software.&nbsp;\nWhile you might start out using this option, there is a chance you\u2019ll\ngrow out of it, as it doesn&#8217;t have all of the bells and whistles that our two\nother recommendations do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Final Cut Pro is a more complex and in\ndepth option compared to iMovie and was widely used and loved by professionals,\nbut they made a lot of changes over the years and have fallen out of vogue with\ntheir audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days many people who edit videos opt\nto go with Adobe Premiere Pro, and that\u2019s our personal recommendation and it\u2019s\nalso what we use here at Spiel Creative to create awesome videos, just like the\none you\u2019re currently watching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because we recommend Premiere Pro, for the\nremainder of this tutorial, we\u2019re going to use this as our example software,\nbut if you\u2019re editing videos with another software package, the process and steps\nare still the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step\n2: Transfer your footage and organise your project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve chosen your preferred software,\nit\u2019s time to import your footage and organise your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to transferring your footage,\nyour first goal is to get it off your device \u2014typically a memory card or maybe directly\nfrom your mobile. It\u2019s best to make a new folder on your computer for each new\nvideo project and store all of your files inside of it. It\u2019s worth noting that\nvideo projects take up a lot of digital space, so if you\u2019re going to be\ncreating a lot of them, you might want to consider cloud storage or an additional\nexternal hard drive, and always create additional back ups in case anything\ngoes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your footage is in a project folder on your computer or external hard drive, you then need to import it and organise in to folders or \u2018bins\u2019, so it can easily be located while you are editing. In Premiere Pro, you can import files by using the&nbsp;Media Browser&nbsp;or the&nbsp;Import command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your footage is imported and organised,\nit\u2019s time to start editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step\n3: Assemble a sequence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A sequence is the actual project you are\ncreating. It is the curated selection of the best of your work that will be\nexported out and shared with your audience. To create your sequence, you\u2019ll\nwant to choose the best takes from your footage and drag and drop them onto\nyour timeline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once they are on your timeline, you\u2019ll want\nto trim and edit the beginning and end of each clip to give your project a more\nnatural pace. You can do this by selecting \u201cin\u201d and \u201cout\u201d points or you can\nsimply use the trim tool directly on your clip on the timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your base sequence is set up, you\u2019ll\nwant to add transitions, title cards and any other effects that make your video\nproject more polished. How you do this varies by the software you\u2019re using, but\nin Premiere Pro, this is done in the Effects Panel where you\u2019ll find some great\noptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If at any point you get stuck or require\nsome inspiration for how to create cool transition, or style that you\u2019ve seen\nelsewhere, then just use Google to find out how to do it. Even the best of the\nbest editing pros get stumped once in a while and there are some excellent\nforums out there that can help answer all of your editing questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step\n4: Add b-roll footage and choose music<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No video project is complete without using\nB-roll footage and adding music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B-roll footage, are any clips and shots\nthat are overlaid on top of the main story on your timeline and it can be used\nto segway between a change in scene or location, or it can add more visual\ndepth to your project. For example if you have a person being interviewed about\nclimbing mountains, then while they are speaking, you would over lay some\nB-roll of climbers in action and dramatic mountain GV\u2019s or \u201cGeneral Views\u201d to\nhighlight the words that are being spoken underneath. B-roll can be footage\nthat you either shot yourself, or you can use stock clips that you licence from\nanother source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also want to add some music that can\ncompliment your project. The best way to find the perfect music track is to\nsimply test out a few alongside your footage and pick the one that feels best.\nTo add music, you simply drag-and-drop a track onto the sound channel, and from\nthere you can change the levels and make any cuts you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing to consider when selecting music,\nis \u2018ownership\u2019, as you can\u2019t use a piece of music without the owners permission\nor paying them a royalty fee, which is why it\u2019s common to select or buy a\n\u2018royalty free track\u2019.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure how to find the best\nsoundtrack for your project, or want some more advice on \u2018Royalty Free Music\u2019,\nI recommend checking out our video on how to find the best music for your\nvideo, available on our channel.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step\n5: Export your project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final step is exporting your project.\nExporting your project is essential as it allows your project to be playable\noutside of your editing software. Without this step you will not be able to\nshare your video with friends, family or your audience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019re happy with the way your video\nlooks and sounds, you\u2019re ready to export. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How you export your video depends on the software\nyou\u2019ve decided to use, but if like us you\u2019re using Premier Pro, you first need\nto ensure that your sequence is selected by selecting your program window, your\ntimeline window or the file of your sequence in the project panel. Once it\u2019s\nselected, you go to file\u2014export\u2014media or use the shortcut Control+M on a Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most\nimportant part of exporting your video is to ensure that you\u2019re exporting with\nthe right settings, regardless of the software you\u2019re using. The standard for\nvideos that are going to be used on the web, for example uploading to YouTube\nor Vimeo, is H.264 video, so we recommend setting your format to that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, ensure in Settings that both Export\nAudio and Export Video are selected or you might end up with a project that only\nhas pictures and no sound or vice versa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With those options selected, you click \u2018export\u2019,\nand then wait for your video file to be created.&nbsp; And that\u2019s it, you\u2019ve now edited and exported\nyour video project, and it\u2019s time to share it with your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One additional step that we recommend,\nespecially if you\u2019re new to creating video projects is to send your final edit\nto a friend or colleague first and get their feedback before you share it with\nyour wider audience.
