Before\nwe get started, make sure you click the subscribe button and hit the bell so\nthat you&#8217;ll get notified every time we upload a video to help you with your\nvideo marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re just starting out and have no\nexperience editing videos, then you\u2019ve come to the right place. Getting started\nwith video editing can seem intimidating \u2014 there\u2019s so much to learn about\nediting software, codecs, frame rates, PC specs, and that\u2019s not even taking\ninto account the hours of practice you&#8217;ll need if you wish to hone your craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But remember, editing is an art, and not a\nscience, so the best way to learn is to simply jump in and start experimenting.\nBut, before you can roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty, you&#8217;re gonna\nneed something to edit with. So, our first tip is: invest in the right\nequipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find a fast computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no two ways around it: editing\nvideos takes a lot of processing power, so purchasing a fast computer is by far\none of the best investments you can make when starting out. Without one, you\u2019re\ngoing to end up pulling your hair out as you struggle through crashes and\nexceedingly long render times that can really take you out of the flow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, beginners often ask: \u201cwhat\u2019s better,\nMac or PC\u201d? But, this question is a bit misguided: both Macs and PC\u2019s are\nperfectly capable of editing videos \u2014 the only difference between them is the\nsoftware that\u2019s available on each platform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and\nAvid Media Composer are available on both, but Final Cut Pro is a Mac\nexclusive, so if that\u2019s your preferred software, you\u2019ll need to get a Mac. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of worrying about deciding between\na Mac or a PC, you should prioritise the hardware specs of your computer. So\nhere are the most important factors to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The processor,  also known as the CPU<\/li><li>The amount of RAM<\/li><li>Your hard drive\u2019s storage capacity and rotation speed<\/li><li>And finally, the graphics card or GPU<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to CPU\u2019s, the Intel Core i9\nis by far the best choice, and it\u2019s truly the only reliable option when it\ncomes to editing 4K or higher resolution video. Unfortunately, that high\nperformance comes with a hefty price tag, so be prepared to shell out some cash\nfor one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not going to be editing 4k, you\ncan save some money and get away with using an Intel Core i5 or Core i7, but\nwe\u2019d recommend investing in the Core i9 so that you have some room to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, as far as RAM\ngoes, the more you can afford, the better off you\u2019ll be. The bare minimum you\u2019ll need\nfor reliable editing these days is going to be 8GB, but even that\u2019s a bit low.\nIdeally, you\u2019ll want something with around 16GB of RAM or more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you\u2019ll need to make sure you\nhave room to store your footage, so we recommend getting a computer with at\nleast 512 GB of internal storage space as well as an external 1TB scratch drive\nto store footage on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that the higher the resolution\nof your video, the more storage space it will take up. One minute of full HD\nvideo at 30 frames per second is only around 130 MB, but the same footage in 4K\nis a whopping 375 MB. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also want to make sure your hard\ndrive has a fast rotation speed, but this won\u2019t be a problem with most modern\ndrives. That said, we recommend you use a Solid-State Drive, also known as SSD,\nto ensure a quick and stress-free editing experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now your GPU isn&#8217;t as important as the other\nitems on this list, but\nwe recommend getting an Nvidia GTX 1050. If you\u2019re planning to edit 4K\nvideo, an upgrade to the GTX 1660 or higher is worthwhile, and will make your\nediting workflow even faster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But of course, this is just our advice,\nthere are plenty of other options out there, so be sure to do the right\nresearch first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well that&#8217;s your video editing equipment\nsetup, now onto our next tip, tip two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose the right software<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many great options on the market\nthese days, it\u2019s really hard to go wrong no matter what software you choose. In\nthe end, the \u201cright\u201d choice will be based on your own personal goals and\npreferences, so I\u2019d encourage you to sign up for some free trials, look up some\ntutorial videos on YouTube for each software, and play around with each of them\nto get a feel for which you like the best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the standard is to use a non-linear\neditor, or NLE. We at Spiel are big fans of Adobe Premiere Pro, and I highly\nrecommend it to aspiring editors. It\u2019s very popular in the industry, so it\u2019s\ngenerally pretty easy to collaborate with other editors and video makers when\nusing it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, you\u2019ll also want to look into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Avid Media Composer, which is widely considered the industry-standard NLE for enterprises, broadcast networks, and big budget film and TV studios,<\/li><li>There&#8217;s also Final Cut, a Mac exclusive which has shifted its focus a bit more towards the consumer market in recent years due to its ease-of-use, and finally, <\/li><li>DaVinci Resolve, which is a powerful editor that\u2019s become increasingly popular recently due to its robust feature setup and intuitive user interface. Plus, there\u2019s a free version, which is great for editors with a tight budget. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to keep costs low, you may also\nwant to take a look at Blender as well. While it\u2019s primarily a 3D modeling\nsoftware, it does provide editing tools that can be used for regular video as\nwell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So that&#8217;s your editing setup, and your\nsoftware chosen, it&#8217;s time to learn the layout. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn the basics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few things that every editor\nshould know before even touching the keyboard. You wanna know where your\ntimeline is, which is where you&#8217;ll place your clips. As well as how to cut,\ntrim, and also add in some effects like cross fades and zooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this is based on which software you\nchoose, so be sure to look up all of these basic elements before getting\nstarted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now most editing softwares also include\nkeyboard shortcuts, and knowing the hotkeys can save you hours of time in the\nlong run, so start learning those right from the start as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find a printed out cheat sheet helps me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, like most arts, the best way to\nlearn is by doing, so don\u2019t think you need to memorize every hotkey before you\nstart \u2014 you\u2019ll learn them as you go. If you want to be an editor, then just\nstart editing! You\u2019ll naturally learn from your mistakes and successes along\nthe way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On our channel you find a step by step overview\nof the editing process. Be sure to check it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, once you\u2019ve played around a bit and editing\nsomething together, you want to know your export settings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Export your video<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Video exporting can be the most confusing\npart of editing as it sometimes require a bit of technical understanding. Now, some softwares make exporting pretty simple:\nyou select export, choose your desired file type, and hit ok. Since when we\nusing Premiere Pro as you see we simply click Match Sequence Settings and click\nexport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in some cases, you\u2019ll need to\nconfigure all the settings yourself, and that can get confusing. So, let\u2019s\nbreak it down for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you export your video, you\u2019ll choose a\ncodec that will compress your video and save it as a specific file type. Codecs\nvary based on their output file type and how much they compress your video \u2014\nthe more compression a codec applies, the smaller its file size will be.\nUnfortunately, the more compression a codec applies, the lower the output\nquality will be as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some hosting platforms will only accept\ncertain video file types, so we recommend exporting in a universal format like\nMP4 or MPEG4. In Premiere Pro, you can do this by selecting the H.264 codec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next choose an output resolution. This is\nsimply how many pixels your video will have. For example, a 4K video has 4,096\nby 2,160 pixels, which is four times higher than a regular HD video which is\n1280 x 720. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll need to set your bitrate,\nwhich determines how much data is included in each second of video. The file\nsize and quality of your video will increase or decrease as you raise or lower\nthe bitrate. This can be useful for keeping your video\u2019s file size within a specific\nhosting platform\u2019s limits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, you\u2019ll select a frame rate. This\nwill determine how many frames are included in each second of your video.\nGenerally, most productions are filmed at 24 frames-per-second, so choose this\nfor a more cinematic look. But make sure that no matter what you choose, your\nexport frame rate matches the frame rate of the original video in your\ntimeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your video is exported, you&#8217;ve done\nit. You&#8217;ve officially created a video!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, before we sign off, we\u2019ve got one more\ntip for you that can help speed up your edits \u2014 especially if you\u2019re working on\na slower computer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use video proxies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a fairly advanced optimization\ntechnique, but if you can\u2019t get your hands on a fast computer, it can truly be\na lifesaver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\nIn short, a video proxy is a lower-resolution stand-in for high-resolution\nfootage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does that mean? Well, imagine you\u2019re\ntrying to edit 4K on an old computer, and it\u2019s moving along at a snail\u2019s pace.\nWith a video proxy, you can create a HD copy, or proxy, of the 4K footage.\nYou\u2019ll make your edits on the HD footage, which is easier on your computer, and\nwhen you\u2019re ready to export the final version, you\u2019ll simply swap back to the\noriginal 4K video, and all your edits will still be there without having had to\nedit on the 4K footage directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use proxies with many modern editing\nsoftwares, so look up tutorials on Google or YouTube if you want to try this\nout for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s about it! With these tips in\nyour toolbox, you should be able to start your editing journey off on the right\nfoot. Remember though, the key to becoming a great editor is edit, edit, and\nedit! So, get out there, start editing, and don\u2019t worry about making mistakes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope you found this video helpful.
