6 Videos That Explain Cloud Computing

One of the best uses for animated web videos is to explain products or apps that you can’t use real live footage to explain.
You may recall a few weeks back we blogged about how Salesforce were using animation in their digital marketing. They had a great little set of explainer videos that explain the Salesforce services. Since then, we noticed that they have a great video that explains their cloud computing system. It was then we realised that there were lots and lots of explainer or explanatory videos out there regarding cloud computing. We thought it was interesting that so many videos existed to explain the concept, but all of them used vastly different animation styles. Some of our favourites are below..
We’ll get this post started with the Salesforce video. It’s a combination of 2D animation, motion graphics and a technique which is known as kinetic typography.
IBM and ANZ, an Australian bank, partnered to make a series of beautiful, vintage inspired web videos in a series called “Smarter Planet”. This specific type of animation takes cues from whiteboard animation, but has an old fashioned movie element to it. This is achieved by using sepia tones and faded ink for the drawings.
About a month ago, the partnership released another video explaining cloud computing. Drastically different in style, this video features sleek 3D animation in a realistic style that is clearly a popular trend in 3D at the moment (see the Olympics trailer and the British Gas advertisements for evidence of this!). This style of 3D is clearly very 2012.
Never one to be left out, Google UK produced a quirky animated video which combines stop motion and 2D animation, along with their quintessential logos and branding. Their video in particular shows how well you can incorporate house style into an animated video.
Another big website offering cloud services is Amazon. Their video has a youthful spin and its aesthetic is clearly targeted towards a younger, more tech savvy market. Some really great transitions and humour are used in this video.
This final video, while not as popular or big budget as the others, is probably the most informative. The others serve to as aesthetic promotions to cloud computing services, while this one runs through precisely what cloud computing offers. The style of animation used to do this is whiteboard animation interspersed with a presenter. Using small diagrams, this video clearly explains how to get started with cloud computing and how it works.
This blog post showcases the broad variety of animation styles that are being used to explain cloud computing. It is interesting to note that all of these posts are animated web videos. Aside from the above video, they are wholly animated videos. And, they all have thousands and thousands of views. Animated web videos are one of the most efficient and entertaining ways to showcase products or services that don’t lend themselves to live filming.
If you’ve got a tricky product or service that you’re having trouble communicating with your audience, an animated video could be the answer you’ve been searching for. Leave us a comment and let us know which of the above videos was your favourite! Which style of animation do you like best?
